Letter to the Editor

The following letter is in response to the commentary, Watch Out for Spam!, which we posted on January 30:

Dear Editor,

I believe the above piece borders on slander of John Mauldin. Mauldin draws on many reputable sources in his work, including Woody Brock, Dave Rosenberg, and the mentioned Rogoff and Reinhart.  I have never heard of Bill Mitchell. Perhaps he should have a talk with Steve Keen, a fellow Australian, so he can get straightened out. Do you vet the intellectual integrity of your contributors? This gentleman appears to know nothing.

I don’t object to contrary points of view; I welcome them. I object primarily to the tone adopted by Mitchell in his piece. One can present objections in a calm, analytical way, without resorting to hyperbole.

Mitchell’s comments were personal and insulting. Mauldin is well respected; he doesn’t have a million-and-a-half subscribers for nothing! That doesn’t mean his views can’t be challenged, but it can be done in a less inflammatory way.

Any virtue to Mitchell’s objections were lost on me by the manner in which he presented them.

Please continue doing a great job with Advisor Perspectives.

Yours truly,

Bill Bengen

Ed. Note:  Mitchell’s CV is available here.
