Google and NextEra to Develop Data Centers With Power Plants

Alphabet Inc.’s Google Cloud and NextEra Energy Inc. reached an agreement to develop data centers paired with electric plants in the latest example of how intertwined the tech and power sectors have become.

The companies are developing three campuses and working to identify additional locations according to a statement Monday. In October, they announced an agreement to restart a NextEra nuclear plant in Iowa to power Google data centers.

The vast amount of electricity needed for data centers and artificial intelligence has transformed the US power industry, pushing it to forge close ties with the tech industry.

NextEra also said Monday that it has reached about 2.5 gigawatts of clean energy contracts with Meta Platforms Inc. A gigawatt is roughly the output of a single nuclear reactor and can power roughly 750,000 homes.

NextEra shares rose 2.8% before the start of regular trading in New York.
